Is Your Sunscreen Harming You?

Let’s be honest – when shopping for sunscreen the majority of people search for a high SPF (Sunburn Protection Factor) and that’s it.  The actual ingredients are never read.

The EWG’s 2016 Guide to Sunscreen states that almost three-fourths of the products examined offer inferior sun protection or contain worrisome ingredients.  Recent reports from the EWG as well as Consumer Reports have cautioned consumers against using many kinds of conventional sunscreens, particularly on children.

Why? Chemical sunscreens contain one or more of the following harmful chemicals:

•Oxybenzone – an endocrine disruptor that may reduce sperm count in men and may contribute to endometriosis in women.  Oxybenzone was in 70% of the non-mineral sunscreens evaluated by the EWG for this year’s above-referenced guide.

•Octinoxate – may lead to reproductive and developmental toxicity. It is a hormone disruptor and may produce estrogen-like effects. It can also affect the thyroid as well as cause behavioral alterations.

•Homosalate – may disrupt estrogen, androgen, and progesterone.

•Avobenzone – Unstable in sunshine and must be mixed with stabilizers. Breakdown product causes relatively high rates of skin allergies.

Octisalate and octocrylene are two other harmful chemicals that may be found in chemical sunscreens.

Why Switch to Natural Mineral Sunscreen

Non-nano Zinc Oxide provides the best broad spectrum UVA and UVB reflector approved for use as a sunscreen by the Food and Drug Administration.  When applied in a lotion or cream, non-nano Zinc Oxide is not absorbed into the skin.  It sits on top of the skin and reflects both UVA and UVB light. Because it is not absorbed into the skin, it doesn’t irritate or cause allergic reactions.

At Pickle Stew, our homemade sunscreen contains only natural ingredients with an SPF of their own. Since our formula is all natural and has not been formally tested by any regulatory organization, I cannot estimate or make any claims to the final combined SPF. I can state that it works for me and my family (including young children).  The SPF for each ingredient used is as follows:

•Organic, Raw, Unrefined Shea Butter SPF of 6-10

•Pure Virgin Organic Coconut Oil SPF 4-10

•Organic Sweet Almond Oil SPF 5 – 8

•Non-nano Zinc Oxide is 20% of the product providing an SPF of at least 30.

These oils combined with organic non-nano Zinc Oxide make the perfect all-natural sunscreen that is safe for you and your family. Many have asked if it appears white due to the Zinc Oxide.  It is white when applied, but it does not remain white as it is a collaboration of all the ingredients.

The Zinc Oxide Skin Cream does have to be re-applied every hour or so, especially when used with water play.

Available in jars, handheld discs, or roll-up sticks, it can be purchased here.  It is also available at The Sanctuary located at The Starving Artist in Bridgeport, WV.

Ditch the chemicals and protect your skin naturally!
