It seems like every day is National “Something” Day. There is National Tapioca Pudding Day, National Corn Fritters Day, National Blueberry Popsicle Day, and so many others with no rhyme or reason. There’s a day for that, too.
Today, July 15th, is National Give Something Away Day. Meant to share our bounty with those less fortunate, I believe it can be a day to remember without spending a dime.
Give Someone Help
That yard two houses down from you with knee-high grass is likely as unattractive to the owner as it is to you. Why the grass has not been mowed is really not your business. Maybe the owner’s mower broke. Maybe the owner suffered an injury and cannot mow it. Regardless of the reason, help the owner by mowing the grass.
Help someone carry groceries to their car. Help someone without a car get to the grocery store. Yes, that will cost gas but you were probably going anyway.
Hold the door open for someone. Smile at everyone. Give someone a compliment. Go through your closet and give a donation to a local homeless shelter. Lend an ear to someone who needs to talk.
“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Aesop
Give Some Time
That elderly neighbor who never has visitors – she’s lonely. Go visit for a while. Call your parents and talk for a while. Volunteer at a soup kitchen. Visit a nursing home and listen to the stories of days gone by.
Put the electronics down and play a game or read a book with your children. Don’t have children? Go to an orphanage and spend time with those children. While you’re sitting in your comfy home, they are longing for love and attention. Children spell love T-I-M-E.
The Reward is Priceless
Nothing will give you a warmer, cozier feeling than doing something for someone else for no reason at all. If National Give Something Away Day was practiced every single day by all of us, just imagine how much better our world would be.
